Clerihew in Laurels

JOHN BETJEMAN

Laureate, John Betjeman,
Unlike so many tetchy men,
Of equal, or higher caste and greater reputation,
Happily did TV, and yet earned the appellation.

  1. A N Wilson's biography of said Laureate
annoyed some contributors. Bet he was sorry it
Was subject to a practical joke by Bevis Hillier
Which, added to the controversy, only made him look sillier.

  2. ON LAUREATES

Andrew Motion's tenure is now over
Some say over ten years too long
Who will be the next in power
To make up the new royal song?

Ref: "Nora's smack, finesse lack" in Life Happens Between Books!
